A mission-led proposition for faster wildfire detection and response in Mediterranean communities.
We are pleased to share a new article by Tana Rusanov and Tim Taylor, Extinguished in Five Minutes: A Mission-led Response to Mediterranean Wildfires.
Through the story of Milica – a composite figure representing farmers’ experiences of wildfire loss across the Mediterranean – the article explores what is at stake when a small fire becomes uncontrollable within minutes.
Drawing on Korimako’s work in Cetinje, Montenegro, with the Cetinje Agency for Business Development and Support through the Pathways2Resilience initiative, it asks a simple but ambitious question:
What if we could detect, assess and suppress almost every wildfire within its first five minutes?
The article explores how faster detection, rapid-response technology and community capacity could give firefighters and local communities a stronger first response – before a fire becomes a disaster.
We are sharing this proposition more widely because we believe it could be relevant for communities across Montenegro and the wider Mediterranean facing similar wildfire risks.
